[495] "For indeed, Kassapa, formerly the elder bhikkhus were forest dwellers (āraññika) and spoke in praise of forest dwelling; they were almsfood eaters (piṇḍapātika) and spoke in praise of eating almsfood; they were rag-robe wearers (paṃsukūlika) and spoke in praise of wearing rag-robes; they were users of the triple robe only (tecīvarika) and spoke in praise of using the triple robe only; they were of few wishes (appiccha) and spoke in praise of fewness of wishes; they were content (santuṭṭha) and spoke in praise of contentment; they were secluded (pavivitta) and spoke in praise of seclusion; they were aloof from society (asaṃsaṭṭha) and spoke in praise of aloofness from society; they were energetic (āraddhavīriya) and spoke in praise of the arousing of energy (vīriya). "Therein, whatever bhikkhu was a forest dweller and one who spoke in praise of forest dwelling, an almsfood eater and one who spoke in praise of eating almsfood, a rag-robe wearer and one who spoke in praise of wearing rag-robes, a user of the triple robe only and one who spoke in praise of using the triple robe only, of few wishes and one who spoke in praise of fewness of wishes, content and one who spoke in praise of contentment, secluded and one who spoke in praise of seclusion, aloof from society and one who spoke in praise of aloofness from society, energetic and one who spoke in praise of the arousing of energy — him the elder bhikkhus would invite to a seat, saying: 'Come, bhikkhu. What is this bhikkhu's name? Excellent indeed is this bhikkhu! Desirous of the training indeed is this bhikkhu! Come, bhikkhu, sit on this seat.' "Therein, Kassapa, it occurred to the newly ordained bhikkhus: 'It seems that whatever bhikkhu is a forest dweller and one who speaks in praise of forest dwelling, an almsfood eater … a rag-robe wearer … a user of the triple robe only … of few wishes … content … secluded … aloof from society … energetic and one who speaks in praise of the arousing of energy — him the elder bhikkhus invite to a seat, saying: "Come, bhikkhu. What is this bhikkhu's name? Excellent indeed is this bhikkhu! Desirous of the training indeed is this bhikkhu! Come, bhikkhu, sit on this seat."' They practise accordingly, and that is for their welfare and happiness for a long time."
