[494] At Rājagaha, [the Blessed One] was dwelling in the Bamboo Grove, the Squirrels' Feeding Ground. Then the Venerable Mahākassapa approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. As the Venerable Mahākassapa was sitting to one side, the Blessed One said this to him: "Exhort the bhikkhus, Kassapa; give the bhikkhus a talk on the Dhamma, Kassapa. Either I, Kassapa, should exhort the bhikkhus, or you; either I should give the bhikkhus a talk on the Dhamma, or you."
"Venerable sir, Blessed One, the bhikkhus at present are difficult to admonish; they are possessed of qualities that make them difficult to admonish; they are impatient, and they do not accept instruction respectfully."
