[487] Then those bhikkhus, bowing their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, said this to the Blessed One: "A transgression overcame us, venerable sir — foolish as we were, muddled as we were, unskillful as we were — in that we, having gone forth in a Dhamma and Discipline so well proclaimed, spoke in rivalry with one another over learning: 'Come, bhikkhu, who will speak more? Who will speak more beautifully? Who will speak longer?' Venerable sir, may the Blessed One accept our transgression as a transgression, for the sake of restraint in the future."
