[486] When those bhikkhus had sat down to one side, the Blessed One said this to them: "Is it true, bhikkhus, as is reported, that you have been outdoing one another in talk regarding your learning (sutena accāvadatha), saying: 'Come, bhikkhu, who will speak more? Who will speak more beautifully? Who will speak longer?'"
"It is so, venerable sir."
"Bhikkhus, do you understand the Dhamma taught by me in such a way that you outdo one another in talk regarding your learning, saying: 'Come, bhikkhu, who will speak more? Who will speak more beautifully? Who will speak longer?'"
"Surely not, venerable sir."
"If, bhikkhus, you do not understand the Dhamma taught by me in such a way, then, you foolish men (moghapurisā), knowing what, seeing what, do you—having gone forth in a Dhamma and Discipline so well proclaimed—outdo one another in talk regarding your learning, saying: 'Come, bhikkhu, who will speak more? Who will speak more beautifully? Who will speak longer?'"
