[497] He was dwelling at Sāvatthī … "Bhikkhus, for as long as I wish, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unwholesome states, I enter upon and dwell in the first jhāna (paṭhamaṃ jhānaṃ), which is accompanied by thought (vitakka) and examination (vicāra), with rapture (pīti) and happiness (sukha) born of seclusion (viveka). Kassapa too, bhikkhus, for as long as he wishes, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unwholesome states, enters upon and dwells in the first jhāna, which is accompanied by thought and examination, with rapture and happiness born of seclusion."
