[514] Then the bhikkhunī Thullatissā, displeased, gave voice to her displeasure: "How can Master Mahākassapa think to speak the Dhamma in the presence of Master Ānanda, the Videhan sage (Vedehamuni)? Just as a needle-peddler might think to sell a needle in the presence of a maker of fine needles, even so Master Mahākassapa thinks to speak the Dhamma in the presence of Master Ānanda, the Videhan sage." The Venerable Mahākassapa heard the bhikkhunī Thullatissā speaking these words. Then the Venerable Mahākassapa said this to the Venerable Ānanda: "How is it, friend Ānanda — am I the needle-peddler and you the needle-maker, or am I the needle-maker and you the needle-peddler?" "Forgive me, venerable Kassapa; womankind is foolish."
