[524] "When this was said, friend, the Blessed One said to me: 'Kassapa, whoever, himself not knowing, should say "I know" to a disciple thus attentive with his whole mind, or, himself not seeing, should say "I see" — his very head would split. But I, Kassapa, knowing, say "I know"; seeing, I say "I see." Therefore, Kassapa, you should train yourself thus: "A keen sense of moral shame and fear of wrongdoing (hiri-ottappa) shall be established in me toward the elders, the newly ordained, and those of middle standing." Thus indeed, Kassapa, should you train yourself. Therefore, Kassapa, you should train yourself thus: "Whatever Dhamma I hear that is connected with the wholesome, I will listen to that Dhamma attending to all of it as a matter of vital concern, applying the mind to it, directing my whole mind to it, lending ear." Thus indeed, Kassapa, should you train yourself. Therefore, Kassapa, you should train yourself thus: "Mindfulness directed to the body (kāyagatāsati), accompanied by pleasure, shall not be abandoned by me." Thus indeed, Kassapa, should you train yourself.'
"Then, friend, having exhorted me with this exhortation, the Blessed One rose from his seat and departed. For seven days only, friend, did I eat the country's almsfood as a debtor; then on the eighth day final knowledge (aññā) arose. Then, friend, the Blessed One turned off the road and approached the foot of a certain tree. Then, friend, I folded in four my outer robe (saṅghāṭi) of patched cloth, spread it out, and said to the Blessed One: 'Venerable sir, let the Blessed One sit here; that will be for my welfare and happiness for a long time.' The Blessed One, friend, sat down on the seat prepared. Having sat down, friend, the Blessed One said to me: 'Soft indeed, Kassapa, is this outer robe of yours of patched cloth.' 'Venerable sir, let the Blessed One accept my outer robe of patched cloth, out of compassion.' 'But will you, Kassapa, wear my cast-off hempen rag-robes (paṃsukūla)?' 'I will wear, venerable sir, the Blessed One's cast-off hempen rag-robes.'"
