[564] He was dwelling at Sāvatthī. ... "Bhikkhus, here I understand a certain person, having encompassed his mind (citta) with my own mind, thus: 'This venerable one would not deliberately speak falsehood even for the sake of a gold coin (suvaṇṇanikkha) ... even for the sake of a hundred gold coins ... even for the sake of a coin of siṅgī gold ... even for the sake of a hundred coins of siṅgī gold ... even for the sake of the earth filled with gold ... even for the sake of any trifling material thing ... even for the sake of life ... even for the sake of the most beautiful maiden of the land.' Yet on a later occasion I see him — overwhelmed by gain, honor, and fame, his mind overcome — deliberately speaking falsehood. So dreadful, bhikkhus, is gain, honor, and fame ... Thus indeed, bhikkhus, should you train yourselves."
