[587] Bhikkhus, just as a plantain tree gives fruit for its own destruction, gives fruit for its ruin, even so, bhikkhus, gain, honor, and fame (lābhasakkārasiloka) arose for Devadatta for his own destruction; gain, honor, and fame arose for Devadatta for his ruin.
