[592] At Rājagaha, [the Blessed One] was dwelling in the Bamboo Grove (Veḷuvana), at the Squirrels' Feeding Ground (Kalandakanivāpa). Now on that occasion Prince Ajātasattu was going to attend upon Devadatta evening and morning with five hundred carriages, and an offering of food in five hundred pots of cooked provisions was being conveyed to him. Then several bhikkhus approached the Blessed One; having approached, they paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, those bhikkhus said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, Prince Ajātasattu will go to attend upon Devadatta evening and morning with five hundred carriages, and an offering of food in five hundred pots of cooked provisions will be conveyed to him."
