[594] Bhikkhus, suppose they were to crush a gall bladder (pittaṃ) over the nose of a fierce dog; in that way, bhikkhus, the dog would become fiercer by far. Just so, bhikkhus, as long as Prince Ajātasattu goes to attend upon Devadatta evening and morning with five hundred carriages, and an offering of food in five hundred pots is presented to him, so long is only decline to be expected for Devadatta in wholesome states (kusalā dhammā), not growth. So dreadful, bhikkhus, is gain, honor, and fame (lābhasakkārasiloka) … thus should you train yourselves. The Sixth.
