[596] "Bhikkhus, here, having encompassed his mind with my own mind (citta), I understand a certain person thus: 'This venerable one would not knowingly speak falsehood even for his mother's sake.' Yet at a later time I see him — overcome by gain, honour, and renown (lābhasakkārasiloka), his mind consumed — knowingly speaking falsehood. So dreadful, bhikkhus, are gain, honour, and renown — bitter, harsh, an obstruction to the attainment of the unsurpassed security from bondage (yogakkhema). Therefore, bhikkhus, you should train thus: 'We will abandon arisen gain, honour, and renown, and we will not let arisen gain, honour, and renown persist obsessing our mind.' Thus indeed, bhikkhus, should you train."
