[677] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park. Now at that time a certain newly ordained bhikkhu was approaching families excessively (ativelaṃ). The bhikkhus said to him: "Let the venerable one not approach families excessively." Being admonished by the bhikkhus, he said this: "These elder bhikkhus, indeed, will think that families ought to be approached — why then not I?"
Then a number of bhikkhus approached the Blessed One; having approached, they paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, those bhikkhus said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, here a certain newly ordained bhikkhu approaches families excessively. The bhikkhus said to him: 'Let the venerable one not approach families excessively.' Being admonished by the bhikkhus, he said this: 'These elder bhikkhus, indeed, will think that families ought to be approached — why then not I?'"
