[679] "Even so, bhikkhus, here elder bhikkhus, in the morning, having dressed and taking bowl and robe, enter a village or a town for alms. There they speak the Dhamma, and laypeople, filled with confidence, show them expressions of confidence. They make use of that gain without being tied to it, uninfatuated, not blindly absorbed in it, seeing the danger in it and understanding the escape from it. That conduces both to their beauty of complexion and to their strength, and on that account they do not meet death or deadly suffering (dukkha).
"But new bhikkhus, training after the example of those very elder bhikkhus, in the morning, having dressed and taking bowl and robe, enter a village or a town for alms. There they speak the Dhamma, and laypeople, filled with confidence, show them expressions of confidence. They make use of that gain tied to it, infatuated, blindly absorbed in it, not seeing the danger in it and not understanding the escape from it. That conduces neither to their beauty of complexion nor to their strength, and on that account they meet death or deadly suffering.
"Therefore, bhikkhus, you should train thus: 'We shall make use of it without being tied to it, uninfatuated, not blindly absorbed in it, seeing the danger in it and understanding the escape from it.' Thus, bhikkhus, should you train."
