[86] When he had sat down to one side, the Venerable Upavāṇa said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, there are some ascetics and brahmins who declare that suffering (dukkha) is made by oneself; there are, venerable sir, some ascetics and brahmins who declare that suffering is made by another; there are, venerable sir, some ascetics and brahmins who declare that suffering is made both by oneself and by another; and there are, venerable sir, some ascetics and brahmins who declare that suffering, being made neither by oneself nor by another, has arisen fortuitously. Herein, venerable sir, what does the Blessed One hold, what does he declare? And answering in what way would we be speakers of what has been said by the Blessed One, and not misrepresent the Blessed One with what is untrue, and answer in accordance with the Dhamma, so that no legitimate consequence of our assertion would give ground for censure?"
