[134] At Sāvatthī. There the Blessed One said: "Bhikkhus, there are these three pathways of language (niruttipathā), pathways of designation (adhivacanapathā), and pathways of description (paññattipathā) that are unmixed, that were never mixed before, that are not being mixed, that will not be mixed, and that are not rejected by wise ascetics and brahmins. What three?
"Whatever form (rūpa), bhikkhus, is past, ceased, changed: its reckoning (saṅkhā) is 'it was'; its appellation (samaññā) is 'it was'; its designation (paññatti) is 'it was'. It is not reckoned as 'it is'; it is not reckoned as 'it will be'.
"Whatever feeling (vedanā) is past, ceased, changed: its reckoning is 'it was'; its appellation is 'it was'; its designation is 'it was'. It is not reckoned as 'it is'; it is not reckoned as 'it will be'.
"Whatever perception … Whatever volitional formations are past, ceased, changed: their reckoning is 'they were'; their appellation is 'they were'; their designation is 'they were'. They are not reckoned as 'they are'; they are not reckoned as 'they will be'.
"Whatever consciousness is past, ceased, changed: its reckoning is 'it was'; its appellation is 'it was'; its designation is 'it was'. It is not reckoned as 'it is'; it is not reckoned as 'it will be'."
