[140] At Sāvatthī. In the park. Sitting to one side, that bhikkhu said this to the Blessed One: "It would be good, venerable sir, if the Blessed One would teach me the Dhamma in brief … I might dwell ardent (ātāpī) and resolute."
"Conceiving (maññamāna), bhikkhu, one is bound by Māra; not conceiving, one is freed from the Evil One (pāpimant)."
"Understood, Blessed One! Understood, Fortunate One!"
"But in what way, bhikkhu, do you understand in detail the meaning of what was stated by me in brief?"
"Conceiving form (rūpa), venerable sir, one is bound by Māra; not conceiving, one is freed from the Evil One. Conceiving feeling (vedanā) … perception … volitional formations … consciousness, one is bound by Māra; not conceiving, one is freed from the Evil One. It is in this way, venerable sir, that I understand in detail the meaning of what was stated by the Blessed One in brief."
"Good, good, bhikkhu! It is good that you understand in detail the meaning of what was stated by me in brief. Conceiving form, bhikkhu, one is bound by Māra; not conceiving, one is freed from the Evil One. Conceiving feeling … perception … volitional formations … consciousness, one is bound by Māra; not conceiving, one is freed from the Evil One. It is in this way, bhikkhu, that the meaning of what was stated by me in brief should be seen in detail." …
And that bhikkhu became one of the arahants.
