[141] Sāvatthī. There …. Sitting to one side, that bhikkhu said this to the Blessed One: "It would be good, venerable sir, if the Blessed One [would teach me the Dhamma] in brief … I might dwell … resolute."
"One who delights, bhikkhu, is bound by Māra; one who does not delight is freed from the Evil One (pāpimant)."
"Understood, Blessed One! Understood, Sugata!"
"But in what way, bhikkhu, do you understand in detail the meaning of what was spoken by me in brief?"
"Delighting in form (rūpa),[1] venerable sir, one is bound by Māra; not delighting, one is freed from the Evil One. Feeling (vedanā) … perception … volitional formations … delighting in consciousness, one is bound by Māra; not delighting, one is freed from the Evil One. It is in this way, venerable sir, that I understand in detail the meaning of what was spoken in brief by the Blessed One."
"Good, good, bhikkhu! It is good that you understand in detail the meaning of what was spoken by me in brief. Delighting in form, bhikkhu, one is bound by Māra; not delighting, one is freed from the Evil One. Feeling … perception … volitional formations … delighting in consciousness, one is bound by Māra; not delighting, one is freed from the Evil One. It is in this way, bhikkhu, that the meaning of what was spoken by me in brief should be seen in detail." …
And that bhikkhu became one of the arahants.
