[157] When the Buddha, having directly known, set rolling the Wheel of Dhamma (dhammacakka)
for the world together with its devas — the Teacher without a peer —
[teaching] the cessation of personal existence (sakkāya)
and the origin of personal existence,
and the noble eightfold path
leading to the stilling of suffering (dukkha) —
then even those devas of long life,
beautiful and glorious,
became fearful and fell into terror,
like the other beasts before a lion:
"It seems, sirs, that we are impermanent,
not having transcended personal existence!" —
having heard the word of the Arahant,
the released one, the Stable One (tādī).
