[239] Sāvatthī. There … "Bhikkhus, I do not dispute with the world; rather, bhikkhus, the world disputes with me. Bhikkhus, a speaker of the Dhamma (dhammavādī) does not dispute with anyone in the world. That which the wise in the world agree upon as nonexistent, of that I too say, 'It does not exist.' That which the wise in the world agree upon as existent, of that I too say, 'It exists.'
"And what is it, bhikkhus, that the wise in the world agree upon as nonexistent, of which I say, 'It does not exist'? Form (rūpa) that is permanent, stable, eternal, not subject to change — this the wise in the world agree upon as nonexistent, and I too say of it, 'It does not exist.' Feeling (vedanā) … Perception (saññā) … Volitional formations (saṅkhārā) … Consciousness (viññāṇa) that is permanent, stable, eternal, not subject to change — this the wise in the world agree upon as nonexistent, and I too say of it, 'It does not exist.' This, bhikkhus, is what the wise in the world agree upon as nonexistent, of which I say, 'It does not exist.'
"And what is it, bhikkhus, that the wise in the world agree upon as existent, of which I say, 'It exists'? Form, bhikkhus, that is impermanent, suffering (dukkha), subject to change — this the wise in the world agree upon as existent, and I too say of it, 'It exists.' Feeling … Perception … Volitional formations … Consciousness that is impermanent, suffering, subject to change — this the wise in the world agree upon as existent, and I too say of it, 'It exists.' This, bhikkhus, is what the wise in the world agree upon as existent, of which I say, 'It exists.'"
