[315] On one occasion the Venerable Sāriputta and the Venerable Mahākoṭṭhita were dwelling at Bārāṇasī, in the Deer Park at Isipatana. Then in the evening, the Venerable Mahākoṭṭhita, having emerged from seclusion, approached the Venerable Sāriputta; having approached … he said this: "Friend Sāriputta, what are the dhammas that an instructed (sutavā) bhikkhu should attend to wisely (yoniso manasikātabbā)?"
"Friend Koṭṭhita, an instructed bhikkhu should attend wisely to the five aggregates subject to clinging (pañcupādānakkhandhā) as impermanent … as not-self. Which five? Namely: the form (rūpa) aggregate subject to clinging … the consciousness (viññāṇa) aggregate subject to clinging. Friend Koṭṭhita, an instructed bhikkhu should attend wisely to these five aggregates subject to clinging as impermanent … as not-self. It is possible, friend, that an instructed bhikkhu, attending wisely to these five aggregates subject to clinging as impermanent … as not-self, may realize the fruit of stream-entry (sotāpattiphala)."
