[326] The same setting. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Mahākoṭṭhita said this to the Venerable Sāriputta: "Friend Sāriputta, it is said, 'ignorance, ignorance (avijjā).' What now, friend, is ignorance, and in what way has one come to be immersed in ignorance?"
"Here, friend, the uninstructed worldling (assutavā puthujjano) does not understand as it really is the origin and the passing away, the gratification, the danger, and the escape in regard to form; … in regard to feeling (vedanā) … in regard to perception … in regard to volitional formations … he does not understand as it really is the origin and the passing away, the gratification, the danger, and the escape in regard to consciousness. This, friend, is called ignorance, and it is in this way that one has come to be immersed in ignorance."
