[327] The same setting. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Mahākoṭṭhita said this to the Venerable Sāriputta: "'True knowledge (vijjā), true knowledge,' it is said, friend Sāriputta. What now, friend, is true knowledge, and in what way has one arrived at true knowledge?"
"Here, friend, an instructed noble disciple understands as it really is (yathābhūta) the origin and the passing away, the gratification, the danger, and the escape in regard to form (rūpa); in regard to feeling (vedanā) … in regard to perception (saññā) … in regard to volitional formations (saṅkhārā) … he understands as it really is the origin and the passing away, the gratification, the danger, and the escape in regard to consciousness (viññāṇa). This, friend, is called true knowledge, and in this way one has arrived at true knowledge."
