[368] At Sāvatthī. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Rādha said this to the Blessed One: "'The conduit to existence, the conduit to existence (bhavanetti),' venerable sir, it is said. What now, venerable sir, is the conduit to existence, and what is the cessation of the conduit to existence?"
"In form (rūpa), Rādha, whatever desire (chanda), whatever lust, whatever delight (nandi), whatever craving (taṇhā), whatever engagement and clinging (upāyupādāna), whatever mental standpoints, adherences, and underlying tendencies (cetaso adhiṭṭhānābhinivesānusayā) — this is called the conduit to existence; with their cessation there is the cessation of the conduit to existence. In feeling (vedanā), whatever desire … In perception … In volitional formations … whatever desire … In consciousness, whatever desire, whatever lust, whatever delight, whatever craving, whatever engagement and clinging, whatever mental standpoints, adherences, and underlying tendencies — this is called the conduit to existence; with their cessation there is the cessation of the conduit to existence."
