[367] On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park. Then the Venerable Rādha approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Rādha said this to the Blessed One: "'A being (satta), a being,' venerable sir, it is said. In what way, venerable sir, is one called 'a being'?"
"Whatever desire (chanda), whatever lust (rāga), whatever delight (nandi), whatever craving (taṇhā) there is with regard to form, Rādha—there one is stuck (satto), there one is thoroughly stuck (visatto); therefore one is called 'a being.' With regard to feeling (vedanā) … With regard to perception … With regard to volitional formations … Whatever desire, whatever lust, whatever delight, whatever craving there is with regard to consciousness—there one is stuck, there one is thoroughly stuck; therefore one is called 'a being.'
"Suppose, Rādha, boys or girls are playing with little sand houses. So long as they are not devoid of lust, not devoid of desire, not devoid of affection, not devoid of thirst, not devoid of fever, not devoid of craving for those little sand houses, so long do they cherish those little sand houses, play with them, treasure them, and hold them as 'mine.' But when, Rādha, the boys or girls become devoid of lust, devoid of desire, devoid of affection, devoid of thirst, devoid of fever, devoid of craving for those little sand houses, then they scatter those little sand houses with their hands and feet, demolish them, smash them, and put them beyond play. Even so, Rādha, you too should scatter form, demolish it, smash it, put it beyond play; practise for the destruction of craving. Scatter feeling, demolish it, smash it, put it beyond play; practise for the destruction of craving. Perception … Scatter volitional formations, demolish them, smash them, put them beyond play; practise for the destruction of craving. Scatter consciousness, demolish it, smash it, put it beyond play; practise for the destruction of craving. For the destruction of craving, Rādha, is Nibbāna."
