[366] At Sāvatthī. Then the Venerable Rādha approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Rādha said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, it is said, 'Māra, Māra.' In what way, venerable sir, is one called 'Māra'?"
"When there is form (rūpa), Rādha, there might be Māra, or the killer, or the one who dies. Therefore, Rādha, see form thus: 'It is Māra'; see it thus: 'It is the killer'; see it thus: 'It is the one who dies'; see it thus: 'It is disease'; see it thus: 'It is a tumour'; see it thus: 'It is a dart'; see it thus: 'It is misery'; see it thus: 'It is truly misery.' Those who see it thus see rightly. When there is feeling (vedanā) … When there is perception … When there are volitional formations … When there is consciousness, there might be Māra, or the killer, or the one who dies. Therefore, Rādha, see consciousness thus: 'It is Māra'; see it thus: 'It is the killer'; see it thus: 'It is the one who dies'; see it thus: 'It is disease'; see it thus: 'It is a tumour'; see it thus: 'It is a dart'; see it thus: 'It is misery'; see it thus: 'It is truly misery.' Those who see it thus see rightly."
"But right seeing, venerable sir — what is its purpose?"
"Right seeing, Rādha, has disenchantment as its purpose."
"But disenchantment, venerable sir — what is its purpose?"
"Disenchantment, Rādha, has dispassion as its purpose."
"But dispassion, venerable sir — what is its purpose?"
"Dispassion, Rādha, has liberation as its purpose."
"But liberation, venerable sir — what is its purpose?"
"Liberation, Rādha, has Nibbāna as its purpose."
"But Nibbāna, venerable sir — what is its purpose?"
"You have overshot the question, Rādha; you were unable to grasp the limit of the question. For the holy life, Rādha, is lived with Nibbāna as its ground, with Nibbāna as its consummation."
