[377] At Sāvatthī. Then the Venerable Rādha approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Rādho said to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, it is said, 'Māra, Māra.' What now, venerable sir, is Māra?"
"Form (rūpa), Rādha, is Māra; feeling (vedanā) is Māra; perception is Māra; volitional formations are Māra; consciousness is Māra. Seeing thus, Rādha, the instructed noble disciple becomes disenchanted with form, becomes disenchanted with feeling, becomes disenchanted with perception, becomes disenchanted with volitional formations, becomes disenchanted with consciousness. Being disenchanted, he becomes dispassionate; through dispassion he is liberated. When it is liberated, there comes the knowledge (ñāṇa): 'It is liberated.' He understands: 'Birth (jāti) is destroyed, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more coming to any state of being.'"
