[448] "What do you think, bhikkhus—is form (rūpa) permanent or impermanent?"
"Impermanent, venerable sir."
"… subject to change—could such a view as this arise without clinging to it: 'A Tathāgata neither exists nor does not exist after death'?"
"Surely not, venerable sir."
"Thus indeed, bhikkhus, when there is suffering (dukkha), it is by clinging to suffering, by adhering to suffering, that such a view as this arises: 'A Tathāgata neither exists nor does not exist after death.'
"Feeling (vedanā) … perception … volitional formations … Is consciousness permanent or impermanent?"
"Impermanent, venerable sir."
"… subject to change—could such a view as this arise without clinging to it: 'A Tathāgata neither exists nor does not exist after death'?"
"Surely not, venerable sir."
"Thus indeed, bhikkhus, when there is suffering, it is by clinging to suffering, by adhering to suffering, that such a view as this arises: 'A Tathāgata neither exists nor does not exist after death.'"
