[462] "What do you think, bhikkhus — is form permanent or impermanent?"
"Impermanent, venerable sir." … "and subject to change — could such a view arise without clinging (upādāna) to it: 'The self (attā) is without pain and pleasure; it is unimpaired (aroga) after death'?"
"No indeed, venerable sir."
"Thus, bhikkhus, what is impermanent is suffering (dukkha); when that exists, it is by clinging to that that such a view (diṭṭhi) arises: 'The self is without pain and pleasure; it is unimpaired after death.'
"Feeling (vedanā) … perception … volitional formations … Is consciousness permanent or impermanent?"
"Impermanent, venerable sir." … "and subject to change — could such a view arise without clinging to it: 'The self is without pain and pleasure; it is unimpaired after death'?"
"No indeed, venerable sir."
"Thus, bhikkhus, what is impermanent is suffering; when that exists, it is by clinging to that that such a view arises: 'The self is without pain and pleasure; it is unimpaired after death.'"
