Bhikkhus, the arising (uppāda), persistence (ṭhiti), production (abhinibbatti), and manifestation (pātubhāva) of the earth element (pathavīdhātu) … is the manifestation of aging and death. The arising … of the water element (āpodhātu) … of the fire element (tejodhātu) … of the air element (vāyodhātu) … of the space element (ākāsadhātu) … The arising, persistence, production, and manifestation of the consciousness element (viññāṇadhātu) — this is the arising of suffering (dukkha), the persistence of diseases, the manifestation of aging and death.
