[536] On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park. … The Blessed One said this: "Bhikkhus, I will teach you the devas belonging to the gandhabba order (gandhabbakāyikā devā). Listen to that. …
"And what, bhikkhus, are the devas belonging to the gandhabba order? There are, bhikkhus, devas dwelling in the fragrance of roots; there are, bhikkhus, devas dwelling in the fragrance of heartwood; there are, bhikkhus, devas dwelling in the fragrance of softwood; there are, bhikkhus, devas dwelling in the fragrance of bark; there are, bhikkhus, devas dwelling in the fragrance of shoots; there are, bhikkhus, devas dwelling in the fragrance of leaves; there are, bhikkhus, devas dwelling in the fragrance of flowers; there are, bhikkhus, devas dwelling in the fragrance of fruits; there are, bhikkhus, devas dwelling in the fragrance of sap; there are, bhikkhus, devas dwelling in the fragrance of scents. These, bhikkhus, are called the devas belonging to the gandhabba order."
