[537] At Sāvatthī. Then a certain bhikkhu approached the Blessed One … Sitting to one side, that bhikkhu said to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, what is the cause, what is the condition, why someone here, with the breakup of the body, after death, is reborn in companionship with the devas of the gandhabba host (gandhabbakāyikā devā)?"
"Here, bhikkhu, someone practices good conduct with the body, practices good conduct with speech, practices good conduct with the mind. He has heard: 'The devas of the gandhabba host are long-lived, beautiful, and abounding in happiness.' It occurs to him thus: 'Oh, that with the breakup of the body, after death, I might be reborn in companionship with the devas of the gandhabba host!' With the breakup of the body, after death, he is reborn in companionship with the devas of the gandhabba host. This, bhikkhu, is the cause, this is the condition, why someone here, with the breakup of the body, after death, is reborn in companionship with the devas of the gandhabba host."
