[538] Sāvatthī. Then a certain bhikkhu approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, that bhikkhu said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, what is the cause, what is the condition, why someone here, with the breakup of the body, after death, is reborn in the company of the devas (devā) dwelling in fragrant roots?"
"Here, bhikkhu, someone conducts himself well by body, conducts himself well by speech, conducts himself well by mind. He has heard: 'The devas dwelling in fragrant roots are long-lived, beautiful, and abounding in happiness.' The thought occurs to him: 'Oh, that with the breakup of the body, after death, I might be reborn in the company of the devas dwelling in fragrant roots!' He is a giver of fragrant roots. With the breakup of the body, after death, he is reborn in the company of the devas dwelling in fragrant roots. This, bhikkhu, is the cause, this is the condition, why someone here, with the breakup of the body, after death, is reborn in the company of the devas dwelling in fragrant roots."
