[539] At Sāvatthī. Sitting to one side, that bhikkhu said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, what is the cause, what is the condition, whereby someone here, with the breakup of the body, after death, is reborn in companionship with the devas dwelling in fragrant heartwood … with the devas dwelling in fragrant softwood; with the devas dwelling in fragrant bark; with the devas dwelling in fragrant shoots; with the devas dwelling in fragrant leaves; with the devas dwelling in fragrant flowers; with the devas dwelling in fragrant fruit; with the devas dwelling in fragrant sap; with the devas dwelling in fragrant scents?" "Here, bhikkhu, someone conducts himself well (sucarita) by body, conducts himself well by speech, conducts himself well by mind. He has heard: 'The devas dwelling in fragrant heartwood are long-lived, beautiful, and abounding in happiness.' It occurs to him: 'Oh, that with the breakup of the body, after death, I might be reborn in companionship with the devas dwelling in fragrant heartwood; with the devas dwelling in fragrant softwood; with the devas dwelling in fragrant bark; with the devas dwelling in fragrant shoots; with the devas dwelling in fragrant leaves; with the devas dwelling in fragrant flowers; with the devas dwelling in fragrant fruit; with the devas dwelling in fragrant sap; with the devas dwelling in fragrant scents!' He is a giver of fragrant heartwood; he is a giver of fragrant softwood; he is a giver of fragrant bark; he is a giver of fragrant shoots; he is a giver of fragrant leaves; he is a giver of fragrant flowers; he is a giver of fragrant fruit; he is a giver of fragrant sap; he is a giver of fragrant scents. With the breakup of the body, after death, he is reborn in companionship with the devas dwelling in fragrant scents. This, bhikkhu, is the cause, this is the condition, whereby someone here, with the breakup of the body, after death, is reborn in companionship with the devas dwelling in fragrant scents."
