[540] At Sāvatthī. Seated to one side, that bhikkhu said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, what is the cause, what is the condition, whereby someone here, with the breakup of the body, after death, is reborn in the company of the devas dwelling in fragrant roots (mūlagandha)?"
"Here, bhikkhu, someone conducts himself well by body, conducts himself well by speech, conducts himself well by mind. He has heard: 'The devas dwelling in fragrant roots are long-lived, beautiful, and abounding in happiness.' The thought occurs to him: 'Oh, that with the breakup of the body, after death, I might be reborn in the company of the devas dwelling in fragrant roots!' He gives food, gives drink, gives clothing, gives a vehicle, gives a garland, gives scent, gives unguent, gives a bed, gives a dwelling, gives a lamp. With the breakup of the body, after death, he is reborn in the company of the devas dwelling in fragrant roots. This, bhikkhu, is the cause, this is the condition, whereby someone here, with the breakup of the body, after death, is reborn in the company of the devas dwelling in fragrant roots."
