[541] At Sāvatthī. Sitting to one side, that bhikkhu said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, what is the cause, what is the condition, whereby someone here, with the breakup of the body, after death, is reborn in the companionship of the devas dwelling in fragrant heartwood … of the devas dwelling in fragrant softwood … of the devas dwelling in fragrant bark … of the devas dwelling in fragrant shoots … of the devas dwelling in fragrant leaves … of the devas dwelling in fragrant flowers … of the devas dwelling in fragrant fruits … of the devas dwelling in fragrant sap … of the devas dwelling in fragrant scents?"
"Here, bhikkhu, someone conducts himself well (sucarita) by body, conducts himself well by speech, conducts himself well by mind. He has heard: 'The devas dwelling in fragrant scents are long-lived, beautiful, and abound in happiness.' It occurs to him: 'Oh, that with the breakup of the body, after death, I might be reborn in the companionship of the devas dwelling in fragrant scents!' He gives food, he gives drink, he gives clothing, he gives a vehicle, he gives garlands, he gives scents, he gives unguents, he gives a bed, he gives a dwelling, he gives lamps and their requisites. With the breakup of the body, after death, he is reborn in the companionship of the devas dwelling in fragrant scents. This, bhikkhu, is the cause, this is the condition, whereby someone here, with the breakup of the body, after death, is reborn in the companionship of the devas dwelling in fragrant scents."
(Thus, by this single compilation, there are one hundred and twelve suttantas.)
