Suttapiṭaka · Saṁyuttanikāya · Khandhavaggasaṁyutta · Vol. 17 · Section 529

[529] Sāvatthī. Seated to one side, that bhikkhu said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, what is the cause, what is the condition, whereby someone here, with the breakup of the body, after death, is reborn in the company of womb-born (jalābuja) nāgas … of moisture-born (saṃsedaja) nāgas. Of spontaneously born (upapātika) nāgas?" "Here, bhikkhu, someone acts in both ways by body, acts in both ways by speech, acts in both ways by mind. He has heard: 'The spontaneously born nāgas are long-lived, beautiful, abounding in happiness.' The thought occurs to him: 'Oh, that with the breakup of the body, after death, I might be reborn in the company of the spontaneously born nāgas!' He gives food, gives drink, gives clothing, gives a vehicle, gives a garland, gives fragrance, gives ointment, gives a bed, gives a dwelling, gives a lamp (padīpeyya). With the breakup of the body, after death, he is reborn in the company of the spontaneously born nāgas. This, bhikkhu, is the cause, this is the condition whereby someone here, with the breakup of the body, after death, is reborn in the company of the spontaneously born nāgas." (By means of this abbreviated repetition [peyyāla], the ten suttas are to be given in full; concerning the four modes of generation, forty expositions are to be composed; the suttas number ten; the suttas number fifty in all.) The Nāgasaṃyutta [is concluded]. Its summary verse (uddāna): The plain one¹ and the superior one, and the four on the uposatha, "He has heard" — four, and the supports for giving² — four: well proclaimed by means of the nāgas. _____________ ¹ Yu[ropean edition] reads: "suddhikaṃ". ² M[yanmar edition] reads: "dānupakārā ca sāvatthiyaṃ".
