[549] At Sāvatthī. Sitting to one side, that bhikkhu said to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, what is the cause, what is the condition, whereby it is sometimes cold?"
"Bhikkhu, there are devas called cool-cloud devas (sītavalāhakā devā). When it occurs to them thus: 'Suppose we were to delight in our own kind of delight,'¹ then, in accordance with that mental aspiration of theirs, it becomes cold. This, bhikkhu, is the cause, this is the condition whereby it is sometimes cold."
¹ [Footnote in the Siam Raṭṭha edition:] In the M[araṃma/Burmese] edition, the reading "vaseyyāma" ["suppose we were to dwell in our own kind of delight"] appears in all the suttas.
