Bhikkhus, I went in search of the gratification (assāda) in form; whatever gratification there is in form, that I discovered; as far as the gratification in form extends, that has been well seen by me with wisdom (paññā). Bhikkhus, I went in search of the danger (ādīnava) in form; whatever danger there is in form, that I discovered; as far as the danger in form extends, that has been well seen by me with wisdom. Bhikkhus, I went in search of the escape (nissaraṇa) from form; whatever escape there is from form, that I discovered; as far as the escape from form extends, that has been well seen by me with wisdom. Bhikkhus, in feeling (vedanā) I … . Bhikkhus, in perception I … . Bhikkhus, in volitional formations I … . Bhikkhus, I went in search of the gratification in consciousness; whatever gratification there is in consciousness, that I discovered; as far as the gratification in consciousness extends, that has been well seen by me with wisdom. Bhikkhus, I went in search of the danger in consciousness; whatever danger there is in consciousness, that I discovered; as far as the danger in consciousness extends, that has been well seen by me with wisdom. Bhikkhus, I went in search of the escape from consciousness; whatever escape there is from consciousness, that I discovered; as far as the escape from consciousness extends, that has been well seen by me with wisdom.
Bhikkhus, so long as I did not directly know, as it really is, the gratification of these five aggregates subject to clinging as gratification, the danger as danger, and the escape as escape, [for just so long did I not claim to have awakened to the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment] … [but when I did directly know these as they really are, then] I claimed [to have awakened to the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment]. And the knowledge (ñāṇa) and vision arose in me: "Unshakable is my liberation; this is the last birth; now there is no renewed existence."
