[79] At Sāvatthī. Then the Venerable Ānanda, emerging from seclusion in the evening, approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. As the Venerable Ānanda sat to one side, the Blessed One said this to him: "Ānanda, if they should ask you thus: 'Friend Ānanda, of which dhammas is an arising discerned, a vanishing discerned, and an alteration of that which persists discerned?' — being asked thus, Ānanda, how would you answer?"
"Venerable sir, if they should ask me thus: 'Friend Ānanda, of which dhammas is an arising discerned, a vanishing discerned, and an alteration of that which persists discerned?' — being asked thus, venerable sir, I would answer thus: 'Friend, of form (rūpa) an arising is discerned, a vanishing is discerned, and an alteration of that which persists is discerned. Of feeling (vedanā) … of perception … of volitional formations … of consciousness an arising is discerned, a vanishing is discerned, and an alteration of that which persists is discerned. It is of these dhammas, friend, that an arising is discerned, a vanishing is discerned, and an alteration of that which persists is discerned.' Being asked thus, venerable sir, I would answer thus."
