[94] At Sāvatthī. There… "Bhikkhus, whatever ascetics or brahmins there are who, in regarding, regard the self in various ways, all of them regard the five aggregates subject to clinging, or a certain one among them. Which five? Here, bhikkhus, the uninstructed worldling (puthujjana), who has no regard for the noble ones … undisciplined in the Dhamma of superior persons (sappurisadhamma), regards form as self, or self as possessing form, or form as in self, or self as in form. He regards feeling (vedanā) … perception … volitional formations … He regards consciousness as self, or self as possessing consciousness, or consciousness as in self, or self as in consciousness.
"Thus there is both this way of regarding, and the [notion] 'I am' has been arrived at by him. And when, bhikkhus, 'I am' has been arrived at, then there is the descent of the five faculties (indriya) — of the eye faculty, the ear faculty, the nose faculty, the tongue faculty, the body faculty. There is, bhikkhus, the mind; there are dhammas; there is the element (dhātu) of ignorance. Bhikkhus, when the uninstructed worldling is contacted by a feeling born of contact with ignorance, there occurs to him 'I am'; there occurs to him 'I am this'; there occurs to him 'I shall be'; there occurs to him 'I shall not be'; there occurs to him 'I shall have form'; there occurs to him 'I shall be formless'; there occurs to him 'I shall be percipient'; there occurs to him 'I shall be non-percipient'; there occurs to him 'I shall be neither percipient nor non-percipient.'
"But, bhikkhus, the five faculties remain right there; and then, in regard to them, for the instructed noble disciple ignorance is abandoned and true knowledge arises. With the fading away of ignorance and the arising of true knowledge, there does not occur to him 'I am'; there does not occur to him 'I am this'; there does not occur to him 'I shall be'; there does not occur to him 'I shall not be'; there does not occur to him 'I shall have form'; there does not occur to him 'I shall be formless'; there does not occur to him 'I shall be percipient'; there does not occur to him 'I shall be non-percipient'; there does not occur to him 'I shall be neither percipient nor non-percipient.'"
