[117] Then the Venerable Puṇṇa, having delighted in and rejoiced at the Blessed One's words, rose from his seat, paid homage to the Blessed One, and, keeping him on his right, set his lodging in order, took his bowl and robe, and set out on tour toward the Sunāparanta country. Wandering by stages, he arrived at the Sunāparanta country. There the Venerable Puṇṇa dwelt in the Sunāparanta country. Then within that very rains residence the Venerable Puṇṇa led about five hundred lay followers (upāsaka) to declare themselves [as followers]; within that very rains residence he realized the three true knowledges (vijjā); within that very rains residence he attained final Nibbāna (parinibbāyi).
Then a number of bhikkhus approached the Blessed One. Sitting to one side, those bhikkhus said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, the clansman named Puṇṇa, who was exhorted by the Blessed One with a brief exhortation, has died. What is his destination? What is his future state?"
"Bhikkhus, the clansman Puṇṇa was wise. A speaker of truth, [he practiced] the Dhamma in accordance with the Dhamma, and did not trouble [me] on account of the Dhamma. Bhikkhus, the clansman Puṇṇa has attained final Nibbāna."
