[14] "Bhikkhus, before my awakening, while I was still just a bodhisatta (bodhisatta), not yet fully awakened, this thought occurred to me: 'What is the gratification (assāda) in forms, what is the danger (ādīnava), what is the escape (nissaraṇa)? What in sounds …? What in odours …? What in tastes? What in tangibles? What is the gratification in mental phenomena (dhammā), what is the danger, what is the escape?'
"Then, bhikkhus, this occurred to me: 'The pleasure and joy that arise dependent on forms: this is the gratification in forms. That forms are impermanent, suffering (dukkha), and subject to change: this is the danger in forms. The removal of desire and lust (chandarāga), the abandoning of desire and lust, for forms: this is the escape from forms. The pleasure and joy that arise dependent on sounds, on odours, on tastes, on tangibles — that arise dependent on mental phenomena: this is the gratification in mental phenomena. That mental phenomena are impermanent, suffering, and subject to change: this is the danger in mental phenomena. The removal of desire and lust, the abandoning of desire and lust, for mental phenomena: this is the escape from mental phenomena.'
"So long, bhikkhus, as I did not directly know as it really is the gratification of these six external sense bases (āyatana) as gratification, the danger as danger, and the escape as escape, for just so long, bhikkhus, did I not claim to have awakened to the unsurpassed perfect awakening (sammāsambodhi) in this world with its devas, Māra, and Brahmā, in this generation with its ascetics and brahmins, its devas and humans. But when, bhikkhus, I directly knew as it really is the gratification of these six external sense bases as gratification, the danger as danger, and the escape as escape, then, bhikkhus, I claimed to have awakened to the unsurpassed perfect awakening in this world with its devas, Māra, and Brahmā, in this generation with its ascetics and brahmins, its devas and humans. And the knowledge (ñāṇa) and vision arose in me: 'Unshakable is my liberation (vimutti); this is my last birth; now there is no renewed existence.'"
