[15] "Bhikkhus, I went in search of the gratification (assāda) of the eye. Whatever gratification there is in the eye—that I found; as far as the gratification of the eye extends, that has been well seen by me with wisdom. Bhikkhus, I went in search of the danger (ādīnava) of the eye. Whatever danger there is in the eye—that I found; as far as the danger of the eye extends, that has been well seen by me with wisdom. Bhikkhus, I went in search of the escape (nissaraṇa) from the eye. Whatever escape there is from the eye—that I found; as far as the escape from the eye extends, that has been well seen by me with wisdom.
Of the ear, bhikkhus … Of the nose, bhikkhus … Bhikkhus, I went in search of the gratification of the tongue. Whatever gratification there is in the tongue—that I found; as far as the gratification of the tongue extends, that has been well seen by me with wisdom. Bhikkhus, I went in search of the danger of the tongue. Whatever danger there is in the tongue—that I found; as far as the danger of the tongue extends, that has been well seen by me with wisdom. Bhikkhus, I went in search of the escape from the tongue. Whatever escape there is from the tongue—that I found; as far as the escape from the tongue extends, that has been well seen by me with wisdom. … Bhikkhus, I went in search of the gratification of the mind. Whatever gratification there is in the mind—that I found; as far as the gratification of the mind extends, that has been well seen by me with wisdom. Bhikkhus, I went in search of the danger of the mind. Whatever danger there is in the mind—that I found; as far as the danger of the mind extends, that has been well seen by me with wisdom. Bhikkhus, I went in search of the escape from the mind. Whatever escape there is from the mind—that I found; as far as the escape from the mind extends, that has been well seen by me with wisdom.
Bhikkhus, so long as I did not directly know, as it really is, the gratification of these six internal sense bases (āyatana) as gratification, their danger as danger, and the escape from them as escape … I directly knew it. And knowledge (ñāṇa) and vision arose in me: 'Unshakeable is my liberation; this is the last birth; there is now no renewed existence.'
