[16] Bhikkhus, I set out seeking the gratification (assāda) in forms. Whatever gratification there is in forms, that I found. As far as the gratification in forms extends, that has been well seen by me with wisdom (paññā). Bhikkhus, I set out seeking the danger (ādīnava) in forms. Whatever danger there is in forms, that I found. As far as the danger in forms extends, that has been well seen by me with wisdom. Bhikkhus, I set out seeking the escape (nissaraṇa) from forms. Whatever escape there is from forms, that I found. As far as the escape from forms extends, that has been well seen by me with wisdom.

Bhikkhus, I set out seeking the gratification in mental phenomena (dhammā). Whatever gratification there is in mental phenomena, that I found. As far as the gratification in mental phenomena extends, that has been well seen by me with wisdom. Bhikkhus, I set out seeking the danger in mental phenomena. Whatever danger there is in mental phenomena, that I found. As far as the danger in mental phenomena extends, that has been well seen by me with wisdom. Bhikkhus, I set out seeking the escape from mental phenomena. Whatever escape there is from mental phenomena, that I found. As far as the escape from mental phenomena extends, that has been well seen by me with wisdom.
Bhikkhus, so long as I did not directly know, as it really is, the gratification of these six external sense bases (āyatana) as gratification, the danger as danger, and the escape as escape … I directly knew it. And the knowledge (ñāṇa) and vision arose in me: "Unshakeable is my liberation; this is the last birth; now there is no renewed existence."
