[144] "And how, Bhikkhus, is one a dweller in diligence (appamāda)? Bhikkhus, when a bhikkhu dwells with the eye faculty (cakkhundriya) restrained, the mind (citta) is not soiled among forms cognizable by the eye. In one whose mind is unsoiled, gladness (pāmojja) is born; in one who is gladdened, rapture (pīti) is born; in one whose mind is filled with rapture, the body becomes tranquil; one whose body is tranquil dwells happily; the mind of one who is happy becomes concentrated; when the mind is concentrated, dhammas become manifest; owing to the manifestation of dhammas, he is reckoned simply as 'one who dwells in diligence.' … Bhikkhus, when a bhikkhu dwells with the tongue faculty restrained, the mind is not soiled … he is reckoned simply as 'one who dwells in diligence.' … Bhikkhus, when a bhikkhu dwells with the mind faculty restrained, the mind is not soiled among dhammas cognizable by the mind. In one whose mind is unsoiled, gladness is born; in one who is gladdened, rapture is born; in one whose mind is filled with rapture, the body becomes tranquil; one whose body is tranquil feels happiness; the mind of one who is happy becomes concentrated; when the mind is concentrated, dhammas become manifest; owing to the manifestation of dhammas, he is reckoned simply as 'one who dwells in diligence.' It is in this way, Bhikkhus, that one is a dweller in diligence."
