[151] Bhikkhus, Uddaka Rāmaputta, it is said, used to make this utterance: "This, surely, is a knowledge-master (vedagū)! This, surely, has gone forth (pabbaji)! This, surely, has dug out the root of the boil (gaṇḍamūla), not dug out before!" But as to that, bhikkhus, Uddaka Rāmaputta, being no knowledge-master at all, said, "I am a knowledge-master"; not having gone forth at all, he said, "I have gone forth"; the root of the boil being not dug out at all, he said, "I have dug out the root of the boil." But it is a bhikkhu, bhikkhus, who, speaking rightly, might say: "This, surely, is a knowledge-master! This, surely, has gone forth! This, surely, has dug out the root of the boil, not dug out before!"
And how, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu a knowledge-master? When, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu understands as it really is (yathābhūta) the origin and the passing away, the gratification (assāda), the danger (ādīnava), and the escape (nissaraṇa) in regard to the six bases for contact (phassāyatana) — in this way, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is a knowledge-master.
And how, bhikkhus, has a bhikkhu gone forth? When, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, having understood as it really is the origin and the passing away, the gratification, the danger, and the escape in regard to the six bases for contact, is liberated through non-clinging — in this way, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu has gone forth.
And how, bhikkhus, has the root of the boil, not dug out before, been dug out by a bhikkhu? "Boil" (gaṇḍa), bhikkhus: this is a designation for this body composed of the four great elements, sprung from mother and father, built up from boiled rice and porridge, subject to impermanence, to being rubbed and massaged, to breaking apart and dispersal. "Root of the boil," bhikkhus: this is a designation for craving (taṇhā). When, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu's craving has been abandoned, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, brought to non-existence, of a nature not to arise in the future — in this way, bhikkhus, the root of the boil, not dug out before, has been dug out by a bhikkhu.
Bhikkhus, Uddaka Rāmaputta, it is said, used to make this utterance: "This, surely, is a knowledge-master! This, surely, has gone forth! This, surely, has dug out the root of the boil, not dug out before!" But as to that, bhikkhus, Uddaka Rāmaputta, being no knowledge-master at all, said, "I am a knowledge-master"; not having gone forth at all, he said, "I have gone forth"; the root of the boil being not dug out at all, he said, "I have dug out the root of the boil." But this, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, speaking rightly, might say: "This, surely, is a knowledge-master! This, surely, has gone forth! This, surely, has dug out the root of the boil, not dug out before!"
