[161] Bhikkhus, without directly knowing (abhijānaṃ) and without fully understanding (aparijānaṃ) the eye, without becoming dispassionate toward it (avirājayaṃ) and without abandoning it (appajahaṃ), one is incapable of the destruction of suffering (dukkha) … the tongue … without directly knowing and without fully understanding the mind (mano), without becoming dispassionate toward it and without abandoning it, one is incapable of the destruction of suffering.
But, bhikkhus, by directly knowing and fully understanding the eye, by becoming dispassionate toward it and by abandoning it, one is capable of the destruction of suffering … by directly knowing and fully understanding the tongue … the body … the mind, by becoming dispassionate toward them and by abandoning them, one is capable of the destruction of suffering.
