[177] On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha, on Mount Gijjhakūṭa. Then Sakka, lord of the devas, approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and stood to one side. Standing to one side, Sakka, lord of the devas, said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, what is the cause, what is the condition, whereby some beings here do not attain final Nibbāna (parinibbāyanti) in this very life? And what, venerable sir, is the cause, what is the condition, whereby some beings here do attain final Nibbāna in this very life?"
