[178] "There are, Lord of devas (devānaminda), forms cognizable by the eye that are wished for, desirable, agreeable, dear in nature, connected with sensuality, provocative of lust. If a bhikkhu delights in them, welcomes them, and remains holding to them, then for him, as he delights in them, welcomes them, and remains holding to them, consciousness becomes dependent upon that, clinging (upādāna) to that. A bhikkhu with clinging, Lord of devas, does not attain final Nibbāna. … There are, Lord of devas, tastes cognizable by the tongue … There are, Lord of devas, mental phenomena (dhammā) cognizable by the mind that are wished for, desirable, agreeable, dear in nature, connected with sensuality, provocative of lust. If a bhikkhu delights in them, welcomes them, and remains holding to them, then for him, as he delights in them, welcomes them, and remains holding to them, consciousness becomes dependent upon that, clinging to that. A bhikkhu with clinging, Lord of devas, does not attain final Nibbāna. This, Lord of devas, is the cause, this is the reason why some beings here do not attain final Nibbāna in this very life."
